He Is Carrying It So They Do Not Have To

He knows what was said and he knows who said it and he knows the month.

He knows the four things that would still start it up tomorrow if anybody said them at a table, and he knows which two people would never come back from it.

He has never told one person under forty any of it. Not one word. Not a hint. Not in eleven years.

That was a decision. He made it on this beach, on his own, about three months after it happened, and he has kept it without a single lapse since.

Let them have cousins instead of a case.

That was the whole of the thinking. The young ones can grow up loving each other, and go to each other's weddings, and know nothing about any of it, and when they are all fifty they can decide for themselves what they want to know.

Here is what nobody would believe.

It has worked.

Those young ones do love each other. Six of them are genuinely close. They have no idea why two of the older generation are careful with each other, and if you asked them they would say they had never noticed anything.

And here is the thing that has started to sit on him, out here, in the last year or so.

He is the coolness.

The whole of that quarrel now lives in exactly one man. It is not in the family any more. It is in him, in his chest, at that table, every single time, and he is the reason nobody else can see it and he is also the only place it still exists.

If you are keeping something so nobody younger has to, come and sit down on the mat. There is plenty and nobody is asking you a thing.

The name given to a man who repairs

There is a verse that hands out a name to somebody who does a particular kind of work, and the name is worth looking at closely.

And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.Isaiah 58:12

The repairer of the breach.

Not the keeper of the breach. Not the one who holds the record of how the breach happened. A repairer, which is somebody whose work is on the thing itself rather than on the account of it.

And the second name is the one that will help you most. The restorer of paths to dwell in.

A path is for walking on. It is not an archive and it is not a memorial. Restoring a path means people can get from one place to another again, and it says nothing at all about anybody having to be told why the path went bad.

You are being given the name repairer rather than the name archive. Isaiah 58:12 calls the man who does this work the repairer of the breach and the restorer of paths to dwell in, and it is the Holy Spirit who kept both names attached to the work rather than to the memory of the damage, which means eleven years of protecting six young people has been repair and has never once required you to be the permanent record.

The decision was right, and it had no end date

Now the beach, eleven years ago, because the decision deserves defending before anything else is said.

It was right. Children should not inherit a case. A quarrel handed down is a quarrel that outlives everybody who could have settled it, and you looked at six young people and decided they were going to get a family instead, and they did.

That was one of the more genuinely selfless things anybody in this story has done.

The trouble is not the decision. The trouble is that it was made without an end, because nobody makes a decision like that with a review date on it.

You made a good decision that has never once been reviewed, and reviewing it is not the same as reversing it. Ecclesiastes 3:6 says a time to keep, and a time to cast away, and it puts both in a list of seasons rather than making one of them the permanent right answer, and it is the same Spirit who leads a person from one season into the next, which means eleven years of keeping was a season and seasons are allowed to change.

What it costs to be the only place a thing lives

Here is the part that has started to sit on you, and it should be named rather than carried further.

A thing that lives in one man is a thing one man is holding at every gathering.

Every single time that family sits down, you are the one doing the work of two people being careful with each other, because you are the only one who knows why the care is necessary.

You have been doing invisible work at every gathering for eleven years, and nobody has ever thanked you because nobody has ever known. Galatians 6:2 says bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ, and it is written of a load shared between people rather than one carried alone by the strongest, and it is the same Spirit who knits a people together, which means what you have been holding was never designed to sit in a single chest.
