She Was Talked Over Once

She had it ready. She had turned it over all week.

It was not a big thing. It was a genuinely useful observation about something practical, and she had thought about it properly, and she had waited for the right moment because she is not somebody who cuts across people.

The gap came and she opened her mouth.

And a man on the other side of the table started speaking at exactly the same moment, and the room went to him, and he did not even know she had begun, and neither did anybody else.

Four seconds. That is the whole event.

She has not opened her mouth in that room in four years.

Here is what she wants understood, and it matters to her, so let us have it first.

Nobody meant anything by it. Not one thing. That man is a good man and if he knew about this article he would be genuinely upset and would probably ring her, and she does not want him rung. There was no slight, no dismissal, no pattern, and there is no villain in this story and there is not going to be one.

It was an accident that lasted four seconds and it happened in 2022.

And she has told herself that a hundred times. She is not a fool about it and she knows exactly how small it is.

She still feels her chest go when the gap comes round.

Every time. Four years of meetings, and every time there is a natural place to speak, something in her chest does a thing, and she lets it pass, and then she is fine for the rest of the meeting, and she goes home and thinks nothing of it until the next one.

If one small moment closed your mouth, come and get a coffee. Nobody in this hall is waiting on you to say anything.

Who catches what a person says

There is a line about a young person in a house full of older and more established men, and it says something about God that most people read straight past.

And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.1 Samuel 3:19

Did let none of his words fall to the ground.

That is an image of somebody catching. A word that falls to the ground is a word that goes nowhere, that lands in a gap, that nobody picks up, and the verse says plainly that God was the one making sure that did not happen.

And notice who it is said about. A young person with no standing in that house, surrounded by men with position, in an environment where his voice would have been the easiest one in the building to lose.

You are speaking in a room where God Himself has taken responsibility for catching what you say. 1 Samuel 3:19 puts the not-letting-words-fall in the Lord's hands rather than in the room's attentiveness, and it is the Holy Spirit who kept that written about the least established person in the house, which means what happened in four seconds in 2022 was never the mechanism by which your words are kept or lost.

What actually got decided in that room

Now let us be exact about the four seconds, because the size of the event and the size of the consequence do not match, and that mismatch is the whole problem.

Nothing was decided about you.

A man started talking. That is all that occurred. There was no judgment, no assessment, no moment where a room weighed your contribution and set it aside. Nobody in that building formed an opinion, because nobody in that building knew anything had happened.

You are the only person present who knows there was an event.

You have been living under a ruling that nobody handed down. Psalm 118:6 says the Lord is on my side, I will not fear: what can man do unto me, and it is written about what people are actually able to do to somebody rather than what fear reports they can do, and it is the same Spirit who bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God, which means a room that did not notice cannot have decided anything.

What the chest is doing

Here is the honest part, and it should not be talked out of.

Something in your chest does a thing when the gap comes round. That is real. It is not imaginary and it is not silly.

A body learns fast and it does not consult anybody. It took one moment of opening your mouth and having nothing come of it, and it filed that, and it now runs a small warning every time the same conditions arrive.

That is a nervous system doing its job. It is not a verdict on your faith, or your courage, or your character.

You were not weak in that room, and a body that learned something in four seconds is doing what bodies are made to do. Psalm 103:14 says he knoweth our frame, he remembereth that we are dust, and it is written as the reason for God's tenderness rather than as an excuse being made, and it is the same Spirit who is called the Comforter, which means what happens in your chest is being handled gently and not assessed.
