Is Setting A Place Just Not Accepting It

This message is for the reader who suspects that keeping a place set is really refusal to accept reality, and who cannot tell from inside whether it is hope or denial

Here is a question worth putting straight on the table, since it is already sitting there.

There is a plate laid for somebody who has not come in four years. The word used for that, out loud, to anyone who asks, is hope.

And there is another word available for keeping a place for four years, and it has been circling for a while now, and it has been carefully not looked at.

Denial.

Her sister said it gently, in the spring. That maybe it was time to accept it.

Something short got said back, and it has been thought about ever since, because here is the difficulty and it is a real one.

Hope and denial look identical from the inside.

They both keep the plate. They both glance at the door. They both say the same sentence when somebody asks. From within the person doing it, there is no felt difference between faith and refusing to look at something, and anybody who claims there is has not tried it.

So a person can be four years into something and genuinely not know which one they are in.

That is not a spiritual failure. It is a measurement problem, and measurement problems have solutions.

Pull up the low wall and have a mug. This one is answerable.

Is Setting A Place Just Not Accepting It

The line that holds both

There is a verse that puts hope and unresolved trouble in the same breath, and the middle clause is the whole answer.

Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer.Romans 12:12

Three things, one line.

And look at the middle one. Tribulation is named. It is not edited out, not minimized, not reframed as a blessing in disguise, and not skipped over on the way to something more positive.

The hope in that sentence is asked for from somebody who is being told, in the same sentence, that the trouble is real and is going to require patience.

That is the shape of biblical hope. It coexists with an accurately described difficulty. It never requires the difficulty to be edited first.

You are permitted to hold hope and a fully accurate account of the trouble at the same time, and Scripture puts them in one line. Romans 12:12 says rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, and it names the tribulation rather than deleting it, and it is the Holy Spirit who kept both clauses in the same verse, which means a set plate and open eyes are not in conflict.

The test

So here is the working test, and it takes about ninety seconds.

Denial requires a story to be maintained. Hope does not.

Ask yourself these, honestly, and notice what happens in your chest.

Can you say out loud, to another person, the plain sentence: they may never come back, and I may set this place for the rest of my life?

If saying that costs you something but you can say it, and it does not knock the plate off the table, that is hope. Hope survives the accurate sentence.

If saying it feels like it would break something, if you find yourself needing to add a but immediately, if there is a version of events you have to keep in place for the plate to make sense, that is the other thing. Denial cannot survive the accurate sentence, which is why it never gets said.

And notice this: the test does not ask whether they will come. Nobody knows that. It asks whether you can hold the truth and the plate simultaneously.

You have a test you can actually run, and it measures your relationship to the truth rather than your certainty about the future. John 8:32 says ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free, and it puts freedom on the far side of knowing rather than on the far side of a good outcome, and it is the same Spirit who is called the Spirit of truth, which means the sentence you are afraid to say is the one that would release you.

Nobody is being summoned

Let us be plain, because this article has just handed over a sharp instrument.

Nobody here is telling you to contact anybody, and nobody is telling you to take the plate away either. The test does not have a required answer.

If you run it and find you are in denial, the correct response is not to stop setting the place. It is to say the true sentence out loud once, and then set the place anyway, with your eyes open.

You are not being instructed to reach anybody, and nothing here treats the distance as a failure of yours. Romans 12:18 says if it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men, and it puts two limits into one sentence rather than issuing a command without them, and it is the same Spirit who bears witness with your spirit, which means what is possible and what lies in you are both accounted for.

The breakthrough

Something is available in this garden and it is not certainty about your person.

You are able to hold a set place and a true sentence in the same hands, and Scripture wrote them into one verse before you ever tried it. Romans 12:12 puts rejoicing in hope directly beside patient in tribulation, and it is the Holy Spirit who kept the trouble named rather than smoothed over, which means the thing you have been afraid was denial can be moved onto the other side of the line by one honest sentence.

Nobody is asking you to give up the plate. Nobody is asking you to predict anything, and nothing here suggests that hoping less would be more mature.

There is one thing on offer and it takes about ten seconds plus a dinner.

Declare this over yourself

You speak these standing in a place given to you in Christ rather than earned. The authority is His, delegated, and the outcome and its timing stay His to decide. Say what is true, and leave the rest with Him.

  1. Suspicion that I am in denial rather than hope, you are worth answering and there is a test for you. Romans 12 says rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, and the Holy Spirit put hope and unresolved trouble in the same sentence without treating either as a delusion. I am coming back to this table, not because it is settled, but because we are still theirs and His.
  2. Fear of the accurate sentence, in the name of Jesus you are the thing I am saying tonight. The word says ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free, and it puts freedom on the far side of knowing rather than of a good outcome, and His Spirit is the Spirit of truth. I am saying it once and then laying the plate.
  3. Lord, You wrote patient in tribulation into the same line as rejoicing in hope and never asked me to edit the trouble first. Your word says Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies, and Your Spirit is the Comforter. I am keeping that place set with my eyes all the way open.
