She posted the keys back through the door in a padded envelope, because there was nobody left to hand them to.
That is the detail she keeps coming back to. Not the last meeting, not the letter that went out, not the afternoon four of them spent putting chairs into the back of a van. The envelope. Standing on a step in June, hearing her own keys hit the mat on the other side of a door she had opened four mornings a week for twenty years.
She was twenty six when she stood up in front of a room and said she would give her life to it.
And she gave it. Twenty years, and not one of them held back, and she would say the same today about every single one.
Nobody did anything wrong. That is the part that makes it hard to explain to people who want a story. There is no scandal here, no falling out, no villain. Things changed, and then things changed again, and one day the arithmetic simply stopped working, and a group of decent people sat in a room and agreed on the only thing left to agree on.
People have been kind. People keep telling her the fruit is still out there.
It is. She has met some of it, and it is lovely, and she has cried about it in a car park in the good way.
That is not the question.
Here is the question, and she has never once said it out loud, because there is no way to say it that does not sound like a woman asking to be reassured.
What was she standing on for twenty years?
She made a promise. She made it in public, in a room, at twenty six. And the thing she made it to has stopped existing, and so she cannot find where the promise went, and she has caught herself several times since June wondering whether the whole twenty years was built on something that was never load bearing.
If you gave a great many years to a thing that has closed, come and take one of these chairs. Nobody in this room needs anything from you this morning.

What withers, and what does not
There is a passage that says the hard half out loud before it says the other one, and both halves are yours this morning.
The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.Isaiah 40:7-8
It says it twice. That is not an accident of translation. The withering is stated, and then stated again, because people need to hear that part more than once before it goes in.
Things fade. Works fade. Rooms that four mornings a week held something real fade, and Scripture does not pretend otherwise, and it does not tell you the fading was a punishment or a failure or a sign of anything at all.
And then, in the same breath, it names the one thing that does not.
You are standing on the half of that verse that does not wither. Isaiah 40:8 puts the fading of everything visible and the standing of the word of God in a single sentence, and it is the Holy Spirit who kept both halves fastened together rather than letting the first one stand alone, which means the closing you watched in June was the verse doing exactly what it said, and it never once reached the thing underneath.
What the promise was actually made to
Now the twenty six year old in that room, because she is the one this turns on and she has been misremembered.
She did not stand up and give her life to an organization. Nobody does that. A twenty six year old who has just been undone by God does not stand up in a room and bind herself to a set of arrangements.
She gave her life to God, and she named a place where she was going to do it.
The work was the address of the promise. It was never the recipient.
You have a promise that was received by somebody who has not closed, and the address changing does not return the letter. Psalm 89:34 says my covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips, and it is spoken of God's own keeping rather than of any institution's continuity, and it is the same Spirit who has held that word live in you since you were twenty six, so what was said in that room went somewhere that is still standing.
The keys, and what actually went through the door
Here is the thing about that step in June that nobody has said to you.
What went through that letterbox was a set of keys to a building. That is all that went through it.
Twenty years of getting up early did not go through it. The people are not on the mat. Whatever it is in you that made a twenty six year old stand up is not lying on the other side of that door, and it did not go into a van with the chairs.
You were carrying something out of that building that no lock has ever had any authority over. 2 Timothy 1:12 says I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day, and the object of that keeping is a Person rather than a place, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the keeping in the meantime, which means the thing you committed at twenty six is being held somewhere no envelope reaches.
Something is available in this room and it is not the work reopening.
You have twenty years standing on a word that does not wither, and the closing did not reach it. Isaiah 40:8 says the word of our God shall stand for ever and puts it in the same breath as everything visible fading, and it is the Holy Spirit who preserved that pairing exactly as it stands, which means what you were standing on for twenty years is the same thing you are standing on this morning.
Nobody is asking you to explain June to anybody, or to work out what the closing meant, or to decide today what the next twenty years look like. That will come, and it is not this morning's business.
There is one thing on offer, and you do it on your feet.
Declare this over yourself
You speak these standing in a place given to you in Christ rather than earned. The authority is His, delegated, and the outcome and its timing stay His to decide. Say what is true, and leave the rest with Him.
- Twenty years I gave to a thing that closed, you are not wasted and you were never a mistake. Isaiah 40 says the grass withereth, the flower fadeth, but the word of our God shall stand for ever, and the Holy Spirit put the withering and the standing in the same verse. What I swore by is gone, and I am still standing.
- Question of what I was standing on all that time, in the name of Jesus you are answered in this room and you do not follow me out of it. The word says I am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I committed unto Him, and His Spirit is the one doing the keeping. My footing was never only in that.
- Lord, You were the one a twenty six year old made that promise to, and You have not closed. Your word says Your covenant will not be broken nor the thing altered that has gone out of Your lips, and Your Spirit has kept it live in me for twenty years. I am on my feet this morning, and what I gave You is still Yours.
