The Ones With No Title1 Corinthians 12:22-25

The Folding Chair Beside the Vestry Table

This message is for A lay volunteer in a parish budget meeting needs to say one measured sentence about the accessibility ramp without attacking leaders or staging a confrontation.

Every named place at the vestry table is filled before the folding chair appears. It opens with a metal click beside the corner, slightly lower than the others.

The lay volunteer sits there with the budget papers balanced half on the table. Three pages ahead, the accessibility ramp is one line beneath larger figures.

The sentence has been practiced: “Could we keep the ramp in this year's plan and hear what access is costing people now?” It is measured. Still, the chair makes the voice feel borrowed.

This is your folding chair. A title is not required for membership in Christ's body. One sentence can be spoken without attacking anyone or turning the meeting into a confrontation.

The chair's back presses differently from the upholstered seats. Each time someone shifts a folder, the volunteer moves the budget pages to keep them from sliding. The accessibility ramp is scheduled near the end, after heating, insurance, repairs, and staffing.

The practiced sentence has no accusation inside it. It names the plan, asks for present testimony about access, and leaves the room free to deliberate. Still, the body prepares as though one question might be mistaken for rebellion.

The Folding Chair Beside the Vestry Table

The parts called necessary

The low place is not merely nervousness. It is the geometry of belonging: named seats at the table, then one chair added afterward. The body reads that arrangement before discussion begins.

Paul corrects the instinct to rank visible parts.

“Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary... that there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.”1 Corinthians 12:22, 25, KJV

Necessary is stronger than tolerated. Scripture gives honor to the parts easily treated as secondary, and the Holy Spirit carries that Word into the folding chair.

The verse does not set the volunteer against leaders. One body is the whole image. Attacking another part would contradict the very Scripture giving standing to speak.

Paul's argument goes further than permission. The parts that seem weaker are necessary, and honor is deliberately given where appearances withhold it. The volunteer need not claim greater wisdom than the table. Membership itself creates a real contribution.

Lay standing does not require pretending expertise. The volunteer may not know construction schedules, grant conditions, or the full budget. The sentence does not claim to know them. It asks the room to keep human access visible while those facts are considered.

You have a voice here without a title. First Corinthians 12 calls seemingly weaker members necessary, and the Holy Spirit bears that written standing now. Ordinary does not mean spectator.

The accessibility ramp is not a symbol invented for argument. It affects whether bodies can enter safely. Raising it can remain practical, measured, and connected to the agenda.

Accessibility is often postponed by sentences that sound reasonable in isolation. Not this year. After the urgent repair. When another funding source appears. The volunteer does not need to accuse anyone of indifference to observe that repeated postponement has a human cost.

The measured question makes room for knowledge already present in the parish: a person who stopped attending, a parent managing steps, a visitor who needed assistance, a wheelchair user whose route is longer or impossible. Their bodies are not rhetorical devices. They are members and neighbors whose access belongs within care.

Scripture calls for the same care among members, and the Holy Spirit keeps care from becoming confrontation. You are free to speak one sentence and stop. Persuasion, budget decisions, and other people's responses remain outside your control.

Silence has sometimes looked like humility. Yet humility is not disappearance. Christ's body needs parts to contribute what they can see from their position.

Confrontation would make the volunteer responsible for winning. Speech is smaller. The sentence enters the minutes, reaches the ears around the table, and then belongs to the shared process. A faithful voice does not need to dominate in order to exist.

Nor does measured tone mean timid truth. It means the words have been stripped of speculation about motives. “Could we keep the ramp in this year's plan and hear what access is costing people now?” carries urgency without turning leaders into enemies.

The room may answer with constraints the volunteer did not know. Listening after speaking is part of membership too. The body needs voice and ears. Neither cancels the other.

The sentence asks a question rather than assigning motives. It does not accuse leaders of indifference. It places current access costs beside the financial line and allows the room to answer.

Jesus said mustard-seed faith speaks to mountains. The mountain is the belief that a folding chair confers a folding voice. Chair, you do not decide the standing Christ gives.

The breakthrough

Standing comes from membership in Christ, not furniture or title. Scripture calls the overlooked parts necessary, and the Holy Spirit carries that truth now. You can speak without staging a fight.

The decision is the room's to make and God's to govern. Your portion is one measured sentence when the agenda reaches the ramp.

If the proposal is delayed, the voice was not unreal. If the room engages it, the volunteer does not become the source of every good result. Standing is received before outcome, and that is what frees the sentence from performance.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ, and Christ is in you, so standing comes from His body rather than a named seat. Scripture calls the seemingly weaker members necessary, and the Holy Spirit bears that Word now. Every decision and response is His to govern; the outcome is His to decide.

  1. Folding chair, you are a real place in this body and not an afterthought. First Corinthians 12 calls overlooked members necessary, and the Holy Spirit carries that Word beside this table.
  2. Fear of attacking or disappearing, you do not own my voice. In the name of Jesus, release this agenda; I speak one measured sentence and refuse the stage.
  3. God, You arranged the body and give honor where rooms forget it. Holy Spirit, keep Scripture alive in my tone, truthful without accusation and clear without confrontation. I offer my voice and leave the decision with You.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
